I Spy a Road Trip in My Future

Bad news - Kyle's mom is moving to Nashville.
Good news - (other than her promotion; the reason for her move) I get to go to Nashvegas soon!

Kyle's mom left today for her new home in Tennessee.  I am mostly happy for her, although selfishly, not so much.  I actually think I am more upset about her leaving than Kyle!  Ha!  He is the logical one, and knows he will see her soon.  I know I am going to miss Sunday dinners and her sense of humor and everything else in between.  I wrote her a card the other day and it was super sappy and I cried (ha big surprise) so I don't want to go there again.  I just hope Cindy has a great time in Nashville, grows as a person, and comes home to Ralz in a few years.

Chamonix

Hey y'all!  I arrived at work this AM and saw Chamonet.com posted a lot of photos submitted by followers.  Some of the pictures are really impressive, and out of 29 pages, I saved a few of my faves I just had to share!

On top of the world
Sea of clouds over the Chamonix Valley (my fave I think)
Dusk in the Valley
Flying up the Aiguille

PS I just figured out how to do captions on the photos - makes life a little easier!

Nostalgia

I bet you guys get tired of me talking about food and France all the time, but here is some more!

Tomorrow is the day in which I returned from France, one year ago.  As much as I dreaded May 19, because it was the day all my friends left me, I think I'm dreading tomorrow even more, for it is the day I left France.  It is just crazy because I don't feel like I've been home for a year already.  How quickly time flies!  I've done so much in that year - graduated, got a new job, got a dog, and lots of smaller events in between!

My last night

On top of the sadness that I've been away from my second favorite country for almost a year now, I'm also missing being at the Blowing Rock horse show this year.  My family and I have been there every summer for as long as I can remember, and while I did not go last year either, all the jet lag made me miss it just a little less.  It is really hard to be at a desk this week, having not even sat on a horse in 2 months, and see all the updates on social media of all my friends in another one of my favorite places in the whole wide world.  #postgradproblems

Coro and I at BRCHS 2011

Wahh I'm so depressing I know!  Anyways, to try to combat all these sort of negative emotions I'm feeling this week, I've decided to think more seriously about what I want to do with my life, that I will enjoy on a day to day basis, but will also allow me to have the means to be an Amateur Owner hopefully in 5-10 years.  I have a lil idea in mind, but I don't want to get into that until I talk it out some more.  Daydreaming is going to get me through this week and next week!

Finally, the food portion of the blog!  This is a very happy note... The pickles from last weekend turned out wonderfully!  I think next time they need a little more of a kick to them, because I love spicy pickles, but really good on the whole!  I ate them with burgers with chipotle gouda cheese and a balsamic bacon onion jam, and I was in absolute heaven.  Lordy, I love food!  It wasn't very pretty, so I didn't take a picture, but just know it was awesome!

I promise I will try to not be such a Debbie Downer in the future.  I'm just wallowing a little this week...

pickles

It was a very foodie weekend for me.  I tried making refrigerator pickles last night, using a recipe I found from Pinterest, but I have to wait 5-7 days before eating the pickles, so I can't tell you how they turned out just yet.  It was pretty cool though, because I didn't know you have to use specific cucumbers when making pickles, but I lucked out when I went to the Farmer's Market on Saturday and everyone was selling "pickling cucumbers."  The pickles were super super easy to make - it was actually harder to find enough jars for the pickles than it was making the pickles themselves.  I think Kyle & I are going to make burgers sometime next weekend and have the pickles with the burgers.  I will make sure to tell you how they turn out!

In the meantime, here is a link to the recipe I used: Refrigerator Pickle Recipe (although I just used red pepper flakes instead of jalapeno)

Date Night

I did very little today, other than run errands, but it was awesome.  Kyle and I decided it was time for a date night, because its been a while since we had one, but I've really been wanting to have a wine & cheese night, so we stayed in and did that instead of going out like we usually do.  It was wonderful, we ate our wine, cheese, meat, etc then started watching Cloud Atlas (so confusing, I don't recommend it), halfway through we took Sienna on a nice walk around the neighborhood, and then finished the movie.  It was a wonderful relaxing night in.

Yum

Mmm cheese!  The one in the top right was my favorite, top left was Kyle's favorite.  Also, the blackberries I bought at the Farmer's Market today were awesome!

My favorite cheese!

Shout out to Andy, Kyle's grandfather, for making the beautiful wood cutting boards our food was on!

rosé

I had an inspirational wardrobe moment today, and felt like documenting it.  I took a page out of the book of another blogger and fellow horseback rider.  You can see her fabulous clothes (and more) blog HERE!  Sometimes I feel like I make the best outfits when I am completely tired of everything in my closet, but then happen to think of something new on a whim which turns out to be completely stunning.  I feel sort of like a French 50's housemom in this outfit, but I like that.  Please excuse the awkward photos, modeling is not really my thing. Also, see some updated pictures of Sienna.  I'm hoping to do another photo session of her in a few weeks when I get her new Edgewood collar in the mail!

Chicago Part Deux

On the 4th of July I woke up and lazed around for a while because Carly & Emily were not due to arrive at the hostel until 10:30.  I actually wandered around the area surrounding my hostel for 45 minutes, trying to find coffee, only figure out later there was a Starbucks only 2 blocks up the road.  Ugh.  I also talked to my mother and she told me that she was watching the Tour de France come into Montpellier.  I have hardly watched any of the Tour this year, which is depressing, because I love it so much.  When I get home I am going to try to find the Montpellier stages online, and also try to watch the final time trial, which goes in and out of Annecy, one of my favorite French towns.

When Carly and Emily arrived, we caught up in the hostel a bit, and then went to eat at Portillo’s hot dogs while we waited for Sydney to get into town.  After we ate, we went back to pick up Syd, and then went out to do the tourist thing.  Because Carly, Sydney, and Emily live near Chicago, they’ve done most of the tourist stuff already, with the exception of the Bean for Sydney.  It was very crowded, but we had fun making faces into the reflection of the Bean.  You’d think we’d never seen a mirror before.  After we took pictures there, we just wanted to hang out for a while before getting dinner and going to watch the fireworks at Navy Pier.  We went back to the Lurie Gardens and stuck our feet in a little stream there and hung out for a while, just catching up and reminiscing times in France.  We ate dinner at Giordano’s, and their pizza was not good compared to Lou Malnati’s!  We then walked to the Lake and got a great seat for the fireworks.  It was pretty cool watching fireworks from a marina, with Navy Pier in the background.  By the time it was over, we were pretty tired, and had a ways to go to get back to the hostel, so we just headed back and went to bed.

On the 5th, we woke up and went a few doors down to the Pan Hellenic pastry shop (Greektown remember?).  The coffee and pastries were pretty freaking awesome!   Sydney had to check out at 11, so we just headed to Wrigleyville once she checked out and planned to hang out there until the game started.  Syd had her car, so she drove us all – it was very strange for the 4 of us to be in a car together!  I was a total freak show when I saw the stadium – I got very excited!  We walked around the stadium and took some pictures.  I was the only one who didn’t already have an MLB affiliation, so I was the designated Cubs fan for the day!  Sydney had to leave shortly after, so we all said goodbye to her, and then Carly, Emily and I had a few drinks while we killed time before the game started.  Once in the stadium, it was pretty neat, but very very hot.  I was not super pleased about that, but it was fun enough.  I kind of missed all the goofy family things they do at the Durham Bulls games because they didn’t have any of that at the Cubs game, and everyone there took forever to hit the ball, so I got very bored.  We ended up leaving after the 7th inning stretch because we wanted to beat the crowds on the train, and we wanted to watch the sunset from the John Hancock Observatory.  When we got back to the hostel, Emily started not feeling well, and we got halfway to the Observatory and she decided to go home and rest.  Carly and I were kind of bummed out because she didn’t feel well, but the Hancock Observatory was fun and had a great city view.  Carly and I went to a super fun tapas place for a really light dinner and drinks and it was too fun.  The restaurant had a great atmosphere, really Spanish actually, and the food and sangria was almost like what we had in Spain.  It was the perfect end to another really fun day.

On Saturday the 6th, we all woke up and packed up our stuff to leave the hostel.  We checked out at 11 o’clock and went off in search of alcoholic milkshakes; following up on a craving from earlier in the week.  We felt so cool, but my milkshake had too much alcohol to actually taste good.  Once we finished our little snack we went and sat in Washington Park for a while, while talking and taking a lot of ridiculous selfies.  We finally got a little bored, but we were also totally unmotivated, so we just wandered around for a little while longer after ending up at a café until it was time to go with Emily to her train.  Once at the train station, we came across a great little surprise!  A French market!  It really wasn’t too impressive, but we did find macarons and we all freaked out because it seemed too perfect and too good to be true for the ending of the visit.  The macarons were nearly as good as French ones, so we were all really happy.  Carly and I said good bye to Emily, before heading back to the hostel to pick up our bags, and then part ways ourselves.

I’m sitting in Midway typing this now, feeling so satisfied and grateful to have spent the last three days with three people who became family while I was in France.  I am so thankful all three of my core group could make time in their schedules to meet me here in Chicago so we could catch up and visit.  Some parts of it were a little strange because we were doing things we’d never do in France (driving in the car, ordering macarons in English, etc), but a lot of it really felt like we hadn’t spent any time apart at all, which to me, is all that really matters.  I hope to see them before I get married, but if not, at least I know we will see each other in November of 2015!  Love you guys!

The Windy City - Day 1

It’s day # 1 here in the Windy City!  Let me tell you what…. The tourist side of me is out of shape!  I have blisters, I’m pooped, and I got lost (very rare for me!).  Maybe its because I was tired all day from my early early flight out of RDU this morning.  Anyways, I arrived safely in Chicago at 7:30 CST this morning, after having slept the whole way.  My trusty inflatable neck pillow from all my Europe travels finally sprang a leak – very sad!

Nice morning in the clouds!

I got to my hostel in Greek Town relatively easily, was immediately checked in, got settled, and then hit the streets!  I first wandered around Millennium Park for a good while.  It was one of my favorite areas, so I was perfectly content to just meander around for a while.  By the time I made my way to the first part of the Magnificent Mile of shopping, it was almost noon!  I needed food!  I walked half a mile each way for Lou Malnati’s pizza, which I was specifically instructed to get by my co-worker, Mike (shout out to Mike, and STG, who dealt with my incessant questions about Chicago in the past week!).  The pizza did not disappoint, other than the fact that they tell you it is going to take half an hour to make.  I was so hungry I wanted to eat my hand, and then tear down the building, but I behaved myself instead.

First sight out of the subway, too cool

This place is freaking awesome!

Killed this in like .5 seconds

After I ate, I walked around all the shopping areas, but I really didn’t feel like going into any of the stores and actually shopping.  I hate shopping by myself.  I did however, go into Van Cleef & Arpels to try on wedding bands!! It was SO exciting.  They did not have the kind I thought I originally wanted to see, but they had others I hadn’t yet considered, so it was good to see them with my engagement ring, and to also get my size.  I was totally swooning the whole time I love their jewelry so much.  After leaving VC&A I made my way to Navy Pier.  I was not a happy camper on the way because I was tired and my feet were k i l l i n g  me , so I was less than impressed when I arrived at Navy Pier to basically find the fair.  I may check it out again later this week, but I was not in the mood today.  After a very long ordeal, I finally made it back to the hostel, where I passed out for a bit, before going to eat dinner.  Since we are in the Greek area of Chicago, and I am here by myself, I figured why not eat at one of the Greek restaurants near the hostel.  I looked on Yelp to see which ones had good ratings, and the best one was actually right next door to the hostel!  I had a great meal, the environment was so friendly and relaxing, so I was perfectly content.

I just liked that it is Pearson St and the Mag Mile in one place
